You don't need to own hundreds of acres to enjoy living in the country. Here are some ideas for rural living on 40 acres or less:

Orchards or Ornamental Trees. Planting trees not only can help the environment, but can also cut utility bills by providing windbreaks or shade. Choose a variety that grows well in your area.

Vegetable Crop Production. Whether you plan to grow vegetables for your own use or to sell at a local market, gardening can be a great way to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

Fishing
. A well-maintained farm pond can provide habitat for fish and wildlife and be a source of relaxation.

Beekeeping. It helps the environment by increasing pollination. It's also a source of your own honey.

Crop or Hay Production. It may be called hobby farming, but it can also be profitable to grow a few acres of a field crop.

Livestock. Consider raising meat or dairy goats, sheep, llamas, or other less common animals. Raising poultry for eggs or meat is an option. Horses can provide enjoyment on just a few acres.

Wildlife Habitat. A natural habitat can be used for hunting or for observation and photography. Most wildlife problems can be resolved by changing landscape management practices.

Whatever you decide to do with your acreage, use good management practices to keep the land productive, profitable, and sustainable.
